Planting a Future is a Non Profit Organisation with an objective of raising fruit trees seedlings for impoverished households and schools around our village. We intend to embark on a moringa project where we give seedlings to farmers so they grow it on a big scale.
People in my village are starving year in and out due to over dependence on maize. Now the maize crops have failed due to the el nino weather system, decimation of draught animals (oxen) by corridor disease (caused by a parasite), and high cost of fertilisers and seeds. This has left communities without any food security.
I had tried breadfruit which I imported from hawaii (The Breadfruit Institute) in order to help my village have food security but it doesn’t grow well due to climate.
Discovering Moringa has been a real God-send. I am now promoting moringa as it grows well and has proved its usefulness. Moringa is picking up and it is helping a lot of people move come out of poverty.
The biggest challenge is that folks learn with concrete examples. They need to see it working before they can embrace it. Once they see how I benefit from it, then they will follow suite. There is a group in Livingstone that are doing it practically. All they need is some improvements in ingredients and a bigger market.
YOUR MORINGA PROJECT
Last year we distributed hundreds of trees around the villages. They have now grown bigger.
This year we are raising thousands of seedlings for their farms. I am distributing about 50 to each family.
I am also coordinating the moringa project for the village. We are planting a hectare of moringa as a group project. The skills and experience we will get from it will be transferred to farms of our members.
We are moving from table to market, though a lot of information and education is still needed.
