Moringa Leaves – Many Health Benefits and How to Use

We Love this Amazing Leaf

For centuries, civilisations around the world had discovered the numerous health benefits of the leaves of the Moringa tree.  It was given names like the Miracle Tree and the Tree of Life, and moringa leaves were used in treating over 300 diseases.

But it is only recently that modern science has discovered moringa as being the most nutrient dense plant on earth.  Scientists have identified over 90 different nutrients, 46 different antioxidants, and 8 essential amino acids.  That explains why it had been so beneficial for treating so many ailments.

In this article we aim to share with you those many benefits, backed up with the scientific research.  (Click on the links under "What are the Health Benefits of Moringa Leaves?")

How Does Moringa Work?

We know that to have a healthy body we must make healthy food choices.  If our diets are lacking, we may take health supplements to boost our immune systems.

Well, that is exactly what moringa is - nature’s own health supplement in a leaf.  Moringa leaves, both fresh and dried, will give your immune system the health boost it needs to fight and prevent disease.  It works by giving the body the right nutrients so it can heal itself.

Who Can Benefit from Moringa Leaf?

  • The hungry and malnourished in developing countries:  Being drought resistance and growing when other plants have died, Moringa is playing a major role in many developing countries in combating malnutrition, with amazing results.  Research paper here - about how moringa leaf powder was used to help severely malnourished children.
  • The obese and overweight:  Moringa leaves aid in digestion and convert food to energy rather than storing it as fat.  Research paper here - anti-obesity activity of Moringa oleifera.
  • Athletes and Sportspeople:  Super-fit athletes need a super-energy boost, and Moringa does just that.  Pure sustainable energy source without sugar.
  • Nursing Mothers:  In West Africa, nursing mothers are fed dried moringa leaves to increase their milk supply.  The results are astounding.  Babies who had been so severely malnourished now thrive and glow with health..
  • The Elderly: Many elderly become malnourished because they don’t eat properly.  Moringa leaves can give them all the nourishment they need.
  • Children and Teenagers: Growing bodies need good nutrition for strong bones and for sustained energy.
  • The Convalescing and those recovering from illness:  The high nutrients in moringa leaves can speed up the recovery process.
  • Everyone for Good Health:  For general good health and well-being, moringa is like a natural multivitamin in a plant.  Why spend money on expensive health supplements when moringa can do the same thing?

What are the Health Benefits of Moringa Leaves?

How to Use or Take Moringa Leaves

  • Fresh moringa leaves - If you live in a warm climate, you may be able to grow your own moringa tree.  Then you have fresh moringa leaves at your door.  Add the fresh leaves to cooking.  Use in recipes instead of spinach.  New leaves in salad is very tasty and make a lovely garnish.  Also as a tea, add fresh leaves to your teapot.
  • Dried leaves - Add dried leaves to your teapot.  Drink moringa tea on its own or mixed with your favourite teas, herbs and spices.  Add the dried leaves to cooking as your would with fresh leaves, except that you add less dried leaves than fresh leaves.
  • Dried leaf powder - Add to smoothies, mix in cooking, take is straight in water or honey.  Word of warning:  as moringa powder is very potent in nutrients and has a purging effect on the body, it is recommended to start with a small dose (e.g., ¼ teaspoon) and gradually increase the dose to 1-2 teaspoons a day once your body gets accustomed to it.
  • Leaf powder capsules -  Capsules are an easy way to take moringa powder.  Follow the directions on the packaging.
  • Leaf extract - Some suppliers have moringa leaf in extract form, an easy way to get moringa benefits.

Jerry’s Moringa Story

Here’s to anyone who cares about their own self, their bodies, their life, the lives of their children, and the lives of their animals that you take ownership of.

I’m Jerry.  I’m not a writer or a storyteller.  In fact I’ve never even done a testimonial like this. I’m just here to let you know that Moringa can change your life. It has changed mine.

Moringa is a powerful GREEN food source.

Back in 2008, a guy I met (Richard), who is now a friend, was spreading this green stuff all over his salad.  Weird I thought, as I was sipping my rum and coke down in Nicaragua.  As I already had a nice established place in the countryside just down the road, I didn’t refuse when he told me that he would find me some seeds and i could grow my own trees. Richard says, “Try not to lie too hard and really tell me how much GREEN you eat every day.”  K, well he had my attention.

Of course all parties must come to an end and I went home that night. Next day I’m on the computer to see if this guy I met last night was some nut case or is this Moringa tree for real.

A week later Richard shows up with a dozen weird looking seeds.  Of the 12 seeds I grew in front of my house 6 grew to be nice big trees. The other 6 my dogs destroyed.  These 6 surviving trees just keep growing continuously. They’re like at least 12 inches in diameter. We cut them down and they just keep coming back. These 6 trees are like part of of family now. They’re there for life.

A lot has been learned since we planted those trees. First off, after the first month, I think they were about 3 to 4 feet tall. I decided it was time to start consuming moringa leaves. It was a bit strange eating raw green leaves like a cow, but my friend got my attention when he talked about eating raw green food. I also knew from my younger years growing up on a dairy farm, how in the springtime when the cows eat the fresh green grass their milk production went way up.

There was one more thing that changed when the cows eat the fresh grass. Their stool becomes loose. Like they become unconstipated from all the dry hay they eat all winter long. I will never forget the first day I ate 2 to 3 handfuls of moringa leaves. For the first time in my life I had learnt how to deal with my constipation problem that I had suffered from over my lifetime.  Yes, 45 years of age and still didn’t know how to manage my body until this day. Sad but true! If it were for only this one reason that I consume Moringa I would already be on my knees.

It was maybe a month later when i realized that i wasn’t blinking my eyes every second anymore. That was weird!  I could keep my eyes open like for a long time and they wouldn’t burn. I still can’t believe that one. Moringa must have tons of vitamin A in it.

I got tired real quick of eating moringa leaves so i went to www.capsuleconnection.com and bought myself encapsulating equipment and capsules. You can fill capsules very quickly. I bought a Vita Mix blender. (This thing kicks ass!)  A few screens to screen your product!  I now have an endless supply of GREEN raw food.

Over time as I consumed as much moringa as possible i started to realize the food value in it as well. I use to weigh 180 lbs and now I’m 160 lbs. I’m almost never hungry. I eat maybe half of what anyone else eats. I just don’t need it.

I have figured out that for me the best way to consume as much moringa as possible is to mix it with the rest of the food at meal times.  So if it’s breakfast time I’ll take 3 to 4 with my eggs and toast in the morning. Throughout the day if I eat something I’ll pop in 2 to 3.  At night time 2 to 3. Just all day long I keep shovelling them in, replacing all the crap I use to consume.

So bottom line is this: You can manage how often you want to take a crap and when. The really cool thing is too, that for me I’m healthy, so i never get diarrhoea. Ho, and you can throw away all those books in the bathroom because you won’t need them. OK, well enough of that. Here’s something that has been a lot of fun.

From the first 6 moringa trees, we have planted 1500 more around our property. We now have 24000 seeds ready for this year’s planting.  Approximately 2000 seeds per pound.  I’m pretty busy with different projects so that’s as far as I’ve got with my moringa project so far, but as we continue I want to make the perfect pill or tablet so we can eliminate the capsule. Just got to figure out how to stick it together in a good way.  If there’s anyone out there with some ideas, that would be nice.

My best friends are my dogs. Of course they refuse to eat like a cow. But not if you make a nice stir fry with just a bit of pig fat, they’ll fight over that plate.  That’s a good trick for the chickens as well.  A very real way to lower your food bill and keep your animals healthy. I keep 100 chickens. They eat a lot so this really helps. Ho ya, if you like humming birds at your door step with your morning coffee. They love moringa flowers.

Thank you God for the moringa tree.

How to Grow Moringa from Cuttings

LESSONS FROM THE PHILIPPINES:

If you already have access to moringa trees, growing from cuttings is a very effective and quick way to get new moringa trees.  In fact, this is the preferred method in the Philippines.

We can learn a lot from the Filipinos who have been growing and using moringa long, long before any of us heard of it.  Moringa (or malunggay, as they call it) is an essential part their diet, and you will find a moringa tree growing in every household garden.

They say that growing moringa from cutting is very simple.

  1. Get your cutting, but don’t take a little cutting.  Instead you cut off a large branch (anything from 1 to 4 inches thick), and trim it to 2 to 6 ft long.  Prune the branch just above the node, and trim off all the leaves.
  2. Dig a hole about 3 ft wide and 3 ft deep.
  3. Place the branch in the hole and fill up the hole with good soil, sand and rich compost.  Keep adding more of the soil mix so that it form a hill.
  4. Water generously, but do not drown it.  Water again when the soil on top feels dry.  Once the branch starts shooting new growth, you will know it has rooted.  Keep watering until it is established.

TIPS:

  • In India, the custom is to put some cow dung on top of the open end of the cutting. This is an excellent way to protect the cutting from pests.
  • One Filipino gardener says to take the cuttings from near the tree trunk and not the top branches.  Choose a branch that is 4 inches thick.  The reason is that these branches are more woody and hardy than the top branches.

How to Grow Moringa by Direct Seeding

GOING STRAIGHT TO THE GROUND

In the previous post I shared about how to propagate moringa by sowing seeds in pots or bags and then transplanting.  In this article discussed growing moringa by direct seeding for commercial crops.

If you have no shortage of seeds, and you have adequate irrigation, and your climate is warm, then sowing the Moringa seeds directly into the soil is a good option for you.

  1. To speed up the germination soak the seeds overnight in water.  This allows the shell to soften
  2. In a raised and well drained soil, plant the seed 2 cm deep.  If the seeds are plentiful, you can sow two seeds in each hole, and remove the weaker seedling once they have grown about 30cm. (But do this carefully so as not to disturb the roots.)
  3. Alternatively, sow one seed per hole, and one the seeds have sprouted, sow extra seeds in the empty spaces.
  4. Wait 5 to 12 days for the seeds to sprout.
  5. Keep the soil watered but not too much.  The moringa will die if it gets waterlogged.

In the NEXT post we will discuss PROPAGATING WITH CUTTINGS.

Malawi Moringa Project – Miracles in Malawi

THE MISSION

We are thankful to God for the wonderful gift of moringa, which he has planted under our noses.  He has given us the answer to the health and well being of our people, and He opened our eyes to see this marvellous blessing.  We are so encouraged by the transformations we are witnessing.

Our mission is to continue to grow and harvest moringa for the benefit of our whole community in Malawi.  May people see and marvel at what God has done!

BEFORE MORINGA

Before we started the moringa project, moringa was growing in the area, but the people did not know about its benefits.  They would eat it as relish, and also feed the leaves to pigs and goats.  To them it was a simple tree.

INTRODUCING MORINGA

When we first introduced moringa we faced a lot of resistance. Most of people around the community were not willing to sell me moringa since it seemed to be useless to them. People let you to take moringa leaves and seeds, but that was done by myself.  I was seen useless man when picking the moringa.  They thought I was a mad person. The community asked so many questions.  Why am busy with the moringa leaves?  Many seeds were thrown away.  No use was seen then.

YOUR MORINGA PROJECT

Thankfully, things are different now.  The whole of community is now aware of Moringa and its use. But the challenge is to have support.

People now can even use moringa in their tea, in porridge.  The people now can sell me moringa and the demand is now high from community asking me to support them. Now the challenge is opposite.  People will not allow you to take moringa from their gardens for free as I used to.  Now you have to pay them at least more money. While at first the people were not selling and not even allowing to pick off for you. I was doing everything alone.  Now its different story.  I don't do pick it any more, but just buy from them and process the moringa.

RESULTS OF MORINGA

The impact is just great.  Living standards have improved with great impact.  It's easy for more women to buy soap, sugar, salt, clothes, food, and even paying school fees for their children. The money they are getting from their sales of moringa to me has changed the life of many to positive side. More families are happy now. I am like a solution to many of their problems through sales of moringa to me. It is helping elderly, women, children and many people around the community. God should keep blessing the buyers and keep his good work going like that. Also asking more and more buyers to get in.

FUTURE MORINGA

I wish I could have good moringa oil extract, that could simplify my work and make it easy and fast. I wish I could have my own milling machine for powder. Since the one we are using its not easy to process our products as we are only given specific time and days which is not good to the business. Drying machine is also another area of my concern if some well wishers could help.

The size of warehouses, the cost of storage is also small.  I want to find another because the one am having can only keep 7 ton.  The other keeps 2 ton only.

Also to have more buyers, and the investors who can support me to buy land and cultivate a big farm. So that it should support more customers. In my plans am putting the mentioned so that this year it should be a successful year. With God I believe it will work.
